Afgelopen zaterdag 23 juli vond de finale van ons improvisatieconcours in de Grote of St.-Bavokerk plaats. De avond heeft echter geen winnaar voortgebracht. De jury, onder voorzitterschap van de Duitse organist en improvisator Ansgar Wallenhorst, gaf aan meer vernieuwing, creativiteit en originaliteit te verwachten. Om niet alleen het Haarlemse improvisatieconcours, maar ook de improvisatiekunst in het algemeen een kwaliteitsimpuls te geven, besloot zij gisteren geen prijs uit te reiken.
Al sinds 1951 is het Improvisatieconcours het hart van het Internationaal Orgelfestival Haarlem, dat om het jaar in Haarlem plaatsvindt en bezoekers vanuit de gehele wereld trekt. Acht jonge musici deelden afgelopen week hun passie voor het orgel met collega’s en publiek. De organisten Sebastian Benetello (D), Marcel Eliasch (D), Niklas Jahn (D), Cyril Julien (CH) en Evan Bogerd (NL) vielen na twee improvisatierondes af. De organisten Harmen Trimp (NL), David Kiefer (D) en Wouter van der Wilt (NL) waren gisterenavond de drie finalisten. Ze kregen opdracht twee improvisaties te spelen, een op basis van een nieuw gecomponeerd thema van Thomas Lacôte en daarnaast een vrije improvisatie als begeleiding van drie stomme films van circa honderd jaar oud.
De internationale jury, bestaande uit Zuzana Ferjenčíková (SLO/A), Vincent Thévenaz (CH), Dominik Susteck (D), Martijn Padding (NL), Gerben Mourik (NL) en onder voorzitterschap van Ansgar Wallenhorst (D), riep geen winnaar uit. Volgens hen ontbrak het de organisten aan nieuwe en experimentele improvisatietechnieken. Wel kon het publiek stemmen en is de publieksprijs (1000 euro) uitgereikt aan de Nederlandse Harmen Trimp.
Met name innovatie en vernieuwing staan centraal in de missie van het festival. Elke nieuwe editie verwacht de jury nieuwe speeltechnieken, prikkelende improvisatie-experimenten en inspirerende klankwerelden. Volgens de jury bleven de resultaten achter bij de verwachtingen.
De juryvoorzitter Ansgar Wallenhorst verklaarde desgevraagd:
“Haarlem has always been the place where the art of improvisation is the best in the world. Every organist looks up to this festival. It’s a place of invention, originality, and creativity. Due to the pandemic organists missed the routine of concerts, collaborations, and interaction with an audience. We think this is one of the reasons the improvisation performances of the participants of the International Organ festival Haarlem lacked the outstanding level of improvisation Haarlem is known for: surprising the audience with new routes, experimental techniques, unique improvisations one never heard before.
As a jury we feel responsible to keep the high level of the Haarlem Improvisation contest for the future and decided not to give the price to one of the finalists, but we advise the Board of the International Festival Haarlem to use the prize money as an investment in young talent in organ improvisation. We, as a jury, feel strongly connected with the festival and are dedicated to support these young talents in their journey to excellence in any way that we can.”
Het bestuur van het Internationaal Orgelfestival zal bovenstaand advies in overweging nemen en komt later dit jaar met meer nieuws over de bestemming van het prijzengeld.
