International Organ Improvisation Competition 18, 20 and 22 July 2016
The 50th international Improvisation Competition was held from 14-18 July 2014. It took place on theMüller organ ((1738 / IIIP / 62) of the St Bavokerk and the Cavaillé-Coll organ (1875 / IIIP / 47) in the Philharmonie concert hall.
The material for the assignments was created by Louis Andriessen, Hans Haselböck, Roderik de Man and Marcel Wierckx. The 2014 competition jury consisted of five internationally renowed organists: David Briggs (Canada), Jürgen Essl (Germany), Zuzana Ferjencikova (Slovakia/France), Gilbert Amy (France) and Jan Hage (the Netherlands).
From 22 applications from 11 countries, the following 8 contestants have been selected to compete in Haarlem from 14-18 July: Jacob Lekkerkerker, Geerten Liefting and Harmen Trimp (Netherlands), David Cassan (France), Lukas Grimm and Tobias Wittmann (Germany), Morten Ladehoff (Denmark) and Luke Mayernik (USA).
The 8 contestants participated in Round One and Round Two.
• For Round One on Monday 14 juli 2014 in St Bavo's, the theme was written by Hans Haselböck.
• For Round Two on Wednesday 16 July 2014 in the Philharmonie concert hall, Roderik de Man and Marcel Wierckx provided audio-visuals.
After Round Two, four contestants (David Cassan, Lukas Grimm, Tobias Wittmann and Morten Ladehoff) were selected to take part in the Finale on Friday 18 July 2014 in St Bavo’s, for which the theme was composed by Louis Andriessen. Contestants had one hour's preparation on the themes, without the use of an instrument.
David Cassan, the winner of the ImprovisationCompetition has received a prize of 5000 euro. Lukas Grimm, the winner of the audience prize has received 500 euro.
