AWARDS

The International Organ Festival Haarlem has received several awards over the past decade.

On June 22, 2011, the Historical Society of Haarlem awarded the then 60-year-old Organ Festival a Silver Medal. This award emphasized the Festival’s importance to the city of Haarlem, including the Improvisation Competition, the diverse festival concerts, and the International Summer Academy. It also recognized the international recognition of Haarlem’s two city organs: the Müller organ in the Grote or St. Bavokerk and the Cavaillé-Coll organ in the Concertgebouw Philharmonie.

On March 23, 2017, the Festival won the Haarlem Event Ring for its 2016 edition. This Ring is an award for the most important cultural event held in Haarlem in 2016. Breaking down the boundaries between musical disciplines was cited as the main reason for the award, citing a unique Frank Zappa program for organ and percussion in the 2016 festival programming.

On July 22, 2021, Peter Ouwerkerk, general director of the Haarlem Organ Festival, received the Henny Hogenbijl Music Prize. The award was presented to him for his tireless commitment to Dutch organ culture and his strong involvement and dedication to the musical talent development of teenagers. The jury report also cited the Young Talents Class, part of the Haarlem International Summer Academy, and his initiative for the youth project “StayTuned.nu.” This is a long-term project to encourage organ (and piano) playing teenagers to continue playing this beautiful instrument throughout adolescence. The prize money (€15,000) was fully invested in this youth project.
