Course 7
Organ repertoire from the French Classical period by Prof. Aude Heurtematte
Dates: July 20-24 (1st week)
Description
‘As there is a great distance from Grammar to Declamation, there is also an infinite one between Tablature, and the way to play well.’ (François Couperin)
The 17th century saw European organ music flourish in clearly identifiable national styles. In France, the link with dance and vocal music in particular led to a very distinctive language, the vocabulary and rules of which will be explored in depth, along with its constant relationship with registration. We will also explore the central role of emotion in music that has its roots in the Counter-Reformation and essentially aims to achieve one goal: expression.

About Aude Heurtematte
Aude Heurtematte is titular of the famous historic organ of 17th and 18th centuries at Église Saint-Gervais in Paris (organ by Langedhül, Pescheur, Thierry and Clicquot; it is the instrument of the Couperin family during nearly two centuries).
She studied among others with Gaston Litaize, Jean Boyer, and Odile Bailleux, and focused particularly on French classical music with Michel Chapuis and musicologist Jean Saint-Arroman. Her personal research led her to consider this repertoire in a very broad historical, artistic, cultural, religious, and organological context, which sheds light on its emergence and evolution and influences its understanding and interpretation.
She was Organ professor at the Pôle Supérieur and the Conservatoire de Lille, then at the Académie Supérieure de Musique and the Conservatoire de Strasbourg, where she has taught a very great number of students. She pursues a career as a concert performer in France and abroad and is regularly invited to give masterclasses and serve as a jury member for international competitions.
Her recordings of the European repertoire of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, notably François Couperin's two Masses on the organ of Saint-Gervais, have been praised by critics.
