Course 5

Organ repertoire by Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck, Samuel Scheidt & Heinrich Scheidemann by Prof. Matthias Havinga

Dates: July 20-24 (1st week)

Description
The Dutch organist, composer, improviser and ‘Organistenmacher’ J.Pzn. Sweelinck had a profound influence on European organ culture. Although Jan Pieterszoon never left the Netherlands, many organists from abroad travelled to Amsterdam to learn the monumental Renaissance style and the art of varying psalms and other religious and secular melodies. This course focuses on the relationships between the Dutch art of organ playing (and improvising! ) and the early German Lutheran organ style, which ultimately reached Johann Sebastian Bach.
