Course 17
Organ repertoire by Sigfrid Karg-Elert & Max Reger by Prof. Stefan Engels
Dates: July 27-31 (2nd week)
Description
Despite sharing the trait of not being proficient organists, Sigfrid Karg-Elert and Max Reger approached the organ differently. Karg-Elert’s immense fascination led him to meticulously explore registration possibilities, a focus not matched by any other composer in the German tradition. In contrast, Reger viewed the organ similarly to an orchestral instrument, providing minimal registration instructions. This class will examine how to perform the music of these two composers effectively. Participants may choose any Karg-Elert compositions, and alongside Reger’s major works, smaller pieces are recommended to showcase Reger’s varied compositional style distinct from his larger organ compositions.
