Course 21

Organ repertoire by Hendrik Andriessen & Albert de Klerk by Prof. Leo van Doeselaar

Dates: July 27-31 (2nd week)

Description
In collaboration with the Haarlem-based Andriessen/de Klerk Stichting, this year a course will be devoted to two great Haarlem organists, composers (and for a time even neighbours) Hendrik Andriessen and Albert de Klerk. Most of the masterclasses will be given on the Adema organ in St. Joseph’s Church, a French-style instrument on which both composers worked as organists.
Hendrik Andriessen developed his own compositional style, which was initially heavily influenced by César Franck. Andriessen’s organ compositions were also closely linked to his organ improvisation style. The same is true in many cases for the great improviser Albert de Klerk, although he also sought connections with Baroque compositional processes and with some German neo-Baroque pioneers such as Hindemith and Bialas. Nevertheless, the influence of Andriessen and Duruflé is very recognisable in De Klerk’s organ and choral music.
The course is enriched by two interesting Dutch composers who were contemporaries of Andriessen and who have in common that their careers took place mainly abroad. Jan Brandts Buys was highly regarded in Vienna, and Gerard Bunk moved from Rotterdam to Dortmund, where he was appointed organist of the monumental Walcker organ of the Rheinoldikirche for many years. All four composers had in common that they were all-round musicians: conductor, composer, teacher, organist and pianist.
