Summer Academy 2022

The corona situation in the Netherlands is currently stable. All travel and festival restrictions have been released. The board and organization of the International Organ Festival are very happy that we can continue the preparations for the Organ Festival 2022, including a two-week Summer Academy. Corona is not over yet but it is manageable and we are doing everything we can to find safe ways to organize this event which is so important to many organists from around the world.

General information about the Haarlem International Summer Academy for Organists

Founded in 1955, the Summer Academy for Organists in the beautiful city of Haarlem quickly became a mecca for leading organists and students from all over the world. At the very centre of the Summer Academy is one of the most famous organs in the world: the eighteenth-century instrument by Christian Müller in the Bavokerk, in the historic city's main square. Around the corner, in the Philharmonie concert hall, is a fully restored three-manual Cavaillé-Coll organ. Many other important historical organs in the city are used by the teachers and students of the Summer Academy.

Registration for the Summer Academy 2022 will open on January 1, 2022!

Opening weekend
The 2022 International Haarlem Organ Festival starts on Saturday 16 July with a day-long programme on the town’s many historic organs. In the evening a spectacular Festive Opening Concert in St Bavo's church will open the International Haarlem Organ Festival 2022. The Dutch National Youth Choir, conducted by star conductor Sigvards Klava and accompanied by Hayo Boerema on the Müller organ, will guarantee a memorable concert on the highest possible artistic level.

The 49th Summer Academy for Organists: meeting and discussion
The 2022 Summer Academy will provide not only a programme of international masterclasses but also opportunity for meeting and discussion between teachers and students. The Summer Academy is open to undergraduates (studying at a professional music education institute, like a Conservatoire, University of Arts or Musikhochschule) and to graduates active as performing musicians. It will take place from Monday 18 July to Friday 29 July 2022. You can choose courses from a diversity of composers, topics and professors. Each student is expected to attend all five lessons of the course(s) you subscribed for. In case of absence without valid reason you will not be admitted to the lessons any longer. There will be no refund of any course fee or B&B payment. All students who attended all lessons will receive a certificate testifying to their attendance at the Summer Academy.
Please be aware that playing time need to be shared with all participants. There is no guarantee that you may play at each lesson. The professor is instructed to divide the available playing time as fair as possible.
In case you prepared your repertoire poorly, your active status may be altered into passive, to avoid loss of playing time and disappointment by the other students.

Festival Excursion to the South
On Sunday July 24, 2022 we will organize an excursion to Breda, 's-Hertogenbosch and Helmond in the southern provinces of the Netherlands.

Summer Academy Presentation Concert
On Saturday 30 July, the best Summer Academy students will give a Presentation Recital at 11 a.m. in St. Bavo's Church. This Recital concludes the Organ Festival and the Summer Academy. The performing students will be selected by the professors of the courses.

Single masterclasses
It is possible to attend one or more single masterclasses in courses you did not enroll for. This is only possible as listener. Attending a single maserclasses cost € 60 for registered students of the Summer Academy, and € 95 for those who are not registered.

Language
Tuition will be in English. It is therefore absolutely essential that all students have a good understanding of this language.
NL: De voertaal van de Zomeracademie is Engels. Alle studenten dienen deze taal goed te verstaan.
D: Die Unterrichtssprache der Akademie ist die Englische Sprache. Alle Studenten sollen gut Englisch verstehen.
F: La langue véhiculaire de l'Académie étant l'anglais, toutes les étudiants doivent avoir une connaissance passive de cette langue.

Further information
During the Summer Academy a limited range of practise instruments will be available in Haarlem and the vicinity. The festival organisation reserves the right to change the SummerAcademy programme should unavoidable circumstances arise; academy students will be informed of any necessary changes.

Group discount
If more than 5 students of the same organ professor from a Conservatory, School of Music or another educational institution register for the Summer Academy, each of these students will receive a discount of 1% per participating student on the registration and course fees. So if 11 students of the same Professor enroll in the Summer Academy, all these 11 students will receive an 11% discount. The maximum discount is 15%, and the discount does not apply to the B&B fee. The discount will be refunded after arrival in Haarlem. In the Registration form, choose 'I am eligible for group discount'.

Where to stay
SORRY THERE ARE NO MORE GUESTHOUSES AVAILABLE!
Applicants can request help in arranging accommodation on the academy application form. Simple B&B lodgings will be available in private homes, mainly in the suburbs of Haarlem (within app. 30 minutes travel from the centre of the festival). Costs for B&B are ca. €42,50 p.p.p.n. Single rooms can not be guaranteed.

Cancellation

If the corona situation in the Netherlands and restrictions of the Dutch Government forces us to postpone the Summer Academy 2022, a similar arrangemant as in 2020 and 2021 will be available (i.e. maintainance of the subscription, a voucher for the paid fees, or full refund). We will communicate an eventual postponement as soon as possible by our Newsletter.

In case you cancel your submission and/or B&B arrangement for other reasons:In case you cancel your submission and/or B&B arrangement:

Be aware that the registration fee (€ 115) will not be refunded.
When cancelling before June 1st 2022, 75% of the paid fees will be refunded.
When you cancel after June 1st 2022, no refund will be possible, except when your cancellation is caused by visa complications (see under) or by an unexpected change in your medical condition.
In this last instance please send us an original doctor’s statement. If accepted we will refund 75 % of the paid fees.
After July 10, 2022, no fee will be refunded in any case. So, check your personal travel insurance!

Visa

The Festival Organization can help with visa applications (invitation letters etc.) after we received your course fee payment. However, it’s your responsibility to start visa procedures in time! When your visa application is not completed on or after June 30th 2022, we will not refund any paid fees.
